Hydraulic door closers are an essential component of any door system, providing the necessary spring force to close the door. In order to keep your door closing properly and safely, it is essential to check and adjust the tension of the hydraulic door closer regularly.

Check the tension knob
The first step in adjusting the tension on your hydraulic door closer is to check the tension knob. This knob is located on the inside of the door and can be rotated clockwise to tighten the tension, or counterclockwise to loosen it. If the tension is not sufficient, the door won’t close properly. Start by turning the knob clockwise until the door closes smoothly and slowly. If the door closes too slowly, turn the knob counterclockwise to loosen the tension. Make sure you adjust the tension knob in small increments until you get the desired result.
Adjust the tension spring
After adjusting the hydraulic door closer's mounting bracket and arm, the next step is to adjust the tension spring. To do this, start by turning the tension spring adjustment screw clockwise until the door closes slowly and gently. The tension spring should be adjusted until the door closes slowly and stops with a gentle, quiet stop. If the door slams shut, turn the tension spring adjustment screw counter-clockwise, in small increments. If the door is not closing, turn the tension spring adjustment screw clockwise, again in small increments. Once the door is closing slowly and stopping with a gentle, quiet stop, the tension spring is adjusted correctly.
Check the door closer adjuster
After the arm bracket has been installed and the tension has been adjusted, it’s time to check the door closer adjuster. This device is usually located at the bottom of the door closer and is used to adjust the door's closing speed and latch speed. To adjust the door closer adjuster, turn it clockwise to increase the tension and counter-clockwise to decrease the tension. Make sure to adjust it slowly, as too much tension can cause the door to slam shut. Test the door after each adjustment to ensure it's closing and latching properly.
Adjust the door closer bracket
The fourth step for adjusting the tension of a hydraulic door closer is to adjust the door closer bracket. It is important to ensure the bracket is properly adjusted so the door is balanced. To adjust the bracket, loosen the two mounting screws on the bracket. Move the bracket in the direction needed to adjust the tension and then re-tighten the screws. Do not overtighten the screws, as this could damage the bracket or affect the installation. Once the bracket is adjusted, the tension on the door should be correct.
